When people first hear the word "trading", they often think about charts, fast decisions and making money from price movements. But trading is simpler to define. At its core, trading means taking a position based on an expectation about how the price of an instrument may move. You can be right. You can be wrong. And you can lose money. Understanding that from the beginning is important. WHAT YOU'LL LEARN By the end of this lesson, you should be able to: - explain what trading means - understand the relationship between price movement and your position - distinguish trading from investing - understand why every trade involves uncertainty THE BASIC IDEA Imagine an asset is currently trading at 100. You believe its price may rise. You take a position. If the price moves in the direction you expected, the position may generate a profit. If the price moves against you, the position may generate a loss. That's the basic mechanism. But the important word is: may. Trading is not a system where knowing something guarantees a particular outcome. A market can move differently from what you expect. TRADING IS NOT PREDICTION A common beginner mistake is thinking that successful traders know where price will go. They don't. A trading decision is better understood as a structured response to uncertainty. A trader may say: "If the market behaves like this, I will consider entering." and: "If the market behaves differently, my idea is no longer valid." That distinction becomes increasingly important as you progress through the course. TRADING VS. INVESTING Trading and investing can overlap, but they are not the same activity. An investor may hold an asset for a long period based on a longer-term thesis. A trader may focus more heavily on shorter-term price movements and predefined trade conditions. Neither definition tells you which approach is appropriate for you. The important thing at this stage is understanding that different approaches require different processes and risk considerations. KEY TAKEAWAYS - Trading involves taking a position based on an expectation about price movement. - A trade can result in a profit or a loss. - Markets are uncertain. - A trading decision is not the same thing as knowing the future. - Your process matters because you cannot control the market. YOUR TURN Before continuing, answer this: in one sentence, what do you think a trader is actually trying to achieve when entering a trade? There is no perfect answer. The goal is to start thinking in terms of decisions and risk rather than predictions.
